Wenn einer die Bezeichnung „Stehaufmännchen“ verdient, dann Dr. Christoph Berglars Monsun-Sohn Protectionist. Schon von Beginn an galten dem Hengst große Hoffnungen, die er dann im Ansatz auch gleich beim ersten Start mit einem Sieg bestätigte. Danach ging er als deutlicher Favorit ins Ratibor-Rennen, musste aber eine überraschende Niederlage hinnehmen. Wie sich herausstellte, hatte sich Protectionist bei diesem Einsatz einen Haarriss im rechten Unterschenkel zugezogen und musste lange pausieren.
Ein Start im Deutschen Derby stand zwar noch auf seiner Agenda aber dafür puschen wollte man den Hengst nicht und so wurde es Mai bis er im Iffezheimer Derby Trial wieder an den Start gehen konnte. Der dritte Platz ging in Ordnung aber um für das Blaue Band gerüstet zu sein, musste er sich natürlich schon noch steigern. Das tat er dann auch und fertigte in Bremen den Winterfavoriten Limario mit Richterspruch „Leicht 4 Längen“ ab.
Sehr selbstbewusst und topfit befand sich Protectionist zu dieser Zeit in der Form seines Lebens und Jozef Bojko, der ihn im Derby reiten sollte, war seine Chancen betreffend ausgesprochen zuversichtlich. Aber dieser Traum war schnell ausgeträumt. Eine Woche vor dem Derby kreuzten Rehe die Bahn, gerade als ein Lot mit Pferden schon mit ziemlicher Geschwindigkeit unterwegs war. Als Erster kam Monsieur de Frappe zu Fall und mehr oder weniger über ihn drüber stürzte Protectionist. Das hätte ja eventuell noch glimpflich ausgehen können aber die zwei Hengste waren lose und es kam zu einem kleinen Duell zwischen den beiden. Dabei brach sich Protectionist das Griffelbein und ein Start im Derby passé.
Aber dieses Pferd ist ein echtes Phänomen! Zweimal musste er jetzt nun schon die Prozedur aus Verletzung, Schmerzen, Boxenruhe und Rekonvaleszenz ertragen aber er blieb stets guter Dinge. Egal wie oft ein Verband gewechselt werden musste, egal wie lange er seine Box nicht verlassen durfte – er hat das alles weggesteckt als wäre es gerade mal eine kleine Erkältung.
Diese Verletzungspausen verlangten nicht nur dem Pferd Geduld ab sondern auch seinem Besitzer aber dieser hegt schon immer ein großes Faible für den selbstgezogenen Hengst und trug stets jede Entscheidung mit dem nötigen Optimismus mit.
Schon seit einiger Zeit ist der Hengst wieder voll im Training, sieht sensationell aus, die Arbeit macht ihm richtig Spaß und er wird dieses Jahr einiges nachholen können. Unser Vertrauen zu ihm ist ungebrochen und so wie Protectionist auch, haben wir alle unangenehmen Erinnerungen hinter uns gelassen. Nur Jozef Bojko – der mag seither Rehe nur noch in Form von Braten.

Mit Protectionist, einem Monsun-Sohn aus der Patineuse, hatte Züchter und Besitzer Dr. Christoph Berglar für letztes Jahr eine ganz große Hoffnung. Der gut gewachsene und sehr sympathische Hengst verfügte über alle Voraussetzungen um auch zweijährig schon ein ernstes Wort mitreden zu können.
Als er dann Anfang September souverän seine Maidenschaft ablegen konnte, wußte man zwar noch nicht, dass er mit Limario auch den späteren Winterfavoriten hinter sich gelassen hatte, aber auch ohne dieses Wissen bestätigte die Art und Weise seines Sieges die Meinung über ihn.
Und so sahen nicht nur wir der Vorstellung von Protectionist im Krefelder Ratibor-Rennen optimistisch entgegen, auch die Wetter teilten diese Ansicht und der Hengst ging als 25:10-Favorit auf die Reise.
Eigentlich sollte sich Eddie gleich einen Platz hinter der Pace suchen aber der Hengst rutschte am Start weg, versäumte sich etwas und fand sich am Ende des Feldes wieder.
In der Zielgeraden konnte er mit sehr viel Speed zur Spitze aufschließen, hing dabei aber so, dass er sogar noch seinem eigenen Stallgefährten Stellato vor die Füße lief, und auch wenn er sich heftig wehrte, musste er sich dann aber doch „Kampf/Nase“ Flamingo Star geschlagen geben.
Nach dem Rennen ging Protectionist lahm, es wurde im hinteren rechten Unterschenkel ein Haarriss diagnostiziert und es ist zu vermuten, dass er sich diese Verletzung schon am Start zugezogen hat.
Die Heilung und spätere Rekonvaleszenz verlief problemlos und mittlerweile macht er wieder normale Galopparbeit. Er ist in den letzten Monaten noch etwas gewachsen, stärker geworden und sieht für die Jahreszeit schon richtig gut aus.
Protectionist gehört auch diese Saison zu den großen Hoffnungen am Stall und wir sind sicher, er wird nicht enttäuschen.

Wie bereits sein ein Jahr älterer Manduro-Halbbruder Primatist, der vom Typ her nicht viel mit ihm gemein hat, ist nun auch Dr. Christoph Berglars Protectionist auf Ravensberg beheimatet.
Der Monsun-Sohn kam bereits eingeritten in den Rennstall und die Eingewöhnung verlief vollkommen unaufgeregt, wie der junge Hengst überhaupt zu der gemütlichen Sorte gehört und seine täglichen Aufgaben immer sehr locker und lässig erledigt.
Er ist ein freundlicher Geselle, den man gern um sich hat und seine recht selbstgenügsame Art lässt ihn aber auch unauffällig wirken. Sich in den Mittelpunkt schieben und Lärm machen, ist nicht unbedingt sein Ding.
Im Moment bezweifeln wir etwas, dass der Hengst schon zweijährig zur Hand sein wird aber wer weiß, vielleicht überrascht er uns ja.
